Nitro carburizing

Nitro carburizing is a process for enriching the surface layer of a workpiece or part with nitrogen and carbon. The result of the treatment is a nitriding layer that is composed of a compound layer and a diffusion layer. (Refer also to nitriding – in this case only nitrogen is diffused into the surface).

With nitro carburizing the formation of the compound layer is the focus of the treatment. This allows the targeted improvement of wear and corrosion-resistance properties. Through a combination treatment of nitro carburizing and oxidisation, the corrosion resistance of many ferrous metals can be further increased.

The treatment can be carried out in gas (gas nitro-carburization), in a salt bath (salt bath nitro-carburization) or in plasma (plasma nitro-carburization).
